How it Works

Throughout the menstrual cycle, hormonal fluctuations can impact performance. Higher levels of estrogen and progesterone drop available plasma volume by 8%, reducing oxygen available for aerobic metabolism. The Active formula contains the optimal ratio of sucrose, glucose, and electrolytes to replace body water and power you through your workout. Usage

Mix Active with your during-workout water and drink throughout your exercise. Everybody is different, so we recommend starting with 20 oz. of Active-mixed water per hour of exercise. When you work out, see how you feel and adjust accordingly.

What is the difference between Osmo Active Hydration and other hydration mixes on the market?

Osmo Active is more effective than other sports drinks because it is developed based on leading, established, and published scientific research to maximize fluid absorption in the body. Unlike other sports drinks, Osmo is made with natural, organic ingredients. Most sports drinks are made to be calorie-heavy, but this slows the rate of hydration. Instead, Osmo Active is optimized for hydration with sucrose, glucose, and sodium working to maximize your body’s fluid absorption. Our lower carbohydrate percentage, at 3.5% compared to the average 6-8%, ensures that you don’t get residual “slosh” in your stomach from delayed gastric emptying. What do you mean by "food in the pocket, hydration in the bottle?"

This phrase is a key part of the Osmo Nutrition philosophy and the specific blueprint for developing Osmo Active Hydration. What we mean is that an athlete should not rely on liquid calories for their fuel source: calories should be eaten and one should drink for hydration.

One widely held belief in the fitness/athletic/performance industry is that liquid calories are the best way to hydrate and fuel for a race. However, by using solid food for energy and liquids for hydration, both blood sugar and hydration can be optimized and uncomfortable side effects like bloating, sloshing and GI distress can be avoided.

What kinds of food do you suggest that I consume with Active Hydration?

We recommend starting with solid foods and working your way to semisolid options. By this we mean, start by eating something like salted potato cubes, sandwich bites, pretzels, lowfat muffins, or mini cookie bites. If you need to have “engineered nutrition,” we suggest protein-oriented bars, such as Clif MOJO, uncoated Luna bars, or MacroBar. Semisolid foods are your favorite childhood gummy-type candy, such as jelly beans, Swedish Fish or Mike and Ikes. They may not be the most nutritional fare, but they are tasty.

Do you recommend eating gels while drinking Active Hydration during exercise?

No. Gels are not a good thing to consume during exercise because they are a concentrated carbohydrate that goes into a dehydrated gut.

When you eat a gel, you change the osmotic pressure in your digestive tract, which in turn stimulates the body to shift fluid out of the plasma and other spaces to dilute the gel in order for it to be absorbed. This is a process that slows the rate of fluid transfer into the body leading to dehydration.

However, chews and jellybeans are fine to eat during exercise because they solid and are consumed at a slower rate than gel. They also deliver a smaller amount of carbohydrate per bite so you get a continuous input and a smaller dose of carbohydrate than when you swallow a gel.

How is your Optimized for Women line different from the standard mix?

Our Optimized for Women mixes are uniquely formulated for women, based on peer-reviewed science conducted on female athletes. Until very recently, most of the data collected in case studies regarding nutrition and training were conducted almost entirely on men. However, what works for men isn’t automatically effective for women. Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle do have an impact on women’s hydration levels and recovery time (see our Science page for more information). The Optimized for Women mixes were made to help female athletes achieve peak performance at any point in their cycle; however, women who simply want to benefit from better hydration and nutrition can use the standard Osmo mixes and still experience improved performance. If you are an elite female athlete and every second of your race time counts, the optimized mixes can make a crucial difference.

Can women use the standard mix?

Yes, absolutely. Our standard mix helps women as well as men to feel and be great. Our Optimized for Women formula is designed for elite female athletes for whom every second of race time counts. Women can absolutely use the standard mix and still benefit from improved hydration, nutrition, and performance.

How does Optimized for Women work for postmenopausal women?

Research on postmenopausal athletes is very limited, but we do know a lot about the changes of body composition and muscle integrity that occur during and post-menopause. For example, we know that after menopause, blood vessels are less complaint (meaning your blood pressure changes more slowly), there is less core temperature flux tolerance (meaning it gets harder to handle heat); you have greater sensitivity to carbohydrates; the body uses protein less effectively; and the body outputs less power production. So while we designed our Optimized for Women mix to help balance impacted performance throughout the menstrual cycle, similar issues exist post-menopause. In short, if you are a postmenopausal athlete who is focused on peak performance, our Optimized for Women mix can help you achieve it.
