How do I know if I'm properly hydrated when exercising?

A good way to determine whether you’re properly hydrated is to examine the color of your urine first thing in the morning and to monitor the level of your thirst before, during, and after you exercise. When gauging urine color, the rule is generally the clearer the better. Dark yellow urine is a telltale sign of dehydration. Pay attention to hydration in conjunction with exercise intensity, exercise duration and weather conditions so you can adjust your optimal rate of fluid consumption for different situations. When should I drink PreLoad?

PreLoad is for use only before intense, concerted efforts or efforts in the heat. PreLoad is not for use during workouts or for everyday hydration. Its higher concentration of sodium is intended to hyperhydrate you and prepare you to perform your best during especially hot or difficult efforts.

How should I start using PreLoad?

Start by using one dose. If you are drinking it for a high intensity effort, try drinking it the night before. If it is for long and/or hot sessions, drink it before you head out. Ideally, finish the Preload 30 minutes before you go. Drink it cold; this helps mask some of the salty taste if that bothers you. If one dose is a bit too strong, try it half strength. Please note that its higher levels of sodium means it should only be used before a very high-intensity, long, and/or hot session that will definitely cause you to sweat. If you have a history of kidney or blood pressure issues, check with your doctor before using Osmo PreLoad.

How is your Optimized for Women line different from the standard mix?

Our Optimized for Women mixes are uniquely formulated for women, based on peer-reviewed science conducted on female athletes. Until very recently, most of the data collected in case studies regarding nutrition and training were conducted almost entirely on men. However, what works for men isn’t automatically effective for women. Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle do have an impact on women’s hydration levels and recovery time (see our Science page for more information). The Optimized for Women mixes were made to help female athletes achieve peak performance at any point in their cycle; however, women who simply want to benefit from better hydration and nutrition can use the standard Osmo mixes and still experience improved performance. If you are an elite female athlete and every second of your race time counts, the optimized mixes can make a crucial difference.

Can women use the standard mix?

Yes, absolutely. Our standard mix helps women as well as men to feel and be great. Our Optimized for Women formula is designed for elite female athletes for whom every second of race time counts. Women can absolutely use the standard mix and still benefit from improved hydration, nutrition, and performance.

How does Optimized for Women work for postmenopausal women?

Research on postmenopausal athletes is very limited, but we do know a lot about the changes of body composition and muscle integrity that occur during and post-menopause. For example, we know that after menopause, blood vessels are less complaint (meaning your blood pressure changes more slowly), there is less core temperature flux tolerance (meaning it gets harder to handle heat); you have greater sensitivity to carbohydrates; the body uses protein less effectively; and the body outputs less power production. So while we designed our Optimized for Women mix to help balance impacted performance throughout the menstrual cycle, similar issues exist post-menopause. In short, if you are a postmenopausal athlete who is focused on peak performance, our Optimized for Women mix can help you achieve it.
